How Many CE Hours Does My State Require?

NAB-approved for NIC Academy for 88 participant hours. Check your state board for its total requirement, any limit on distance-learning credit, and any required subject areas. NAB does not set your renewal requirement. Your state licensing board determines how many CE hours you need, how much distance learning it accepts, and whether specific topic areas are required. Below is a sample list of several states and their CE credit requirements.

State Requirement in brief Approx. per year
Pennsylvania 48 hours / 2 years 24
New York 48 hours / 2 years 24
Wyoming 25 hours / year 25
Arkansas 20 hours / year 20
California 40 hours / 2 years 20
Georgia 40 hours / 2 years 20
Massachusetts 20 hours / year 20
Ohio 40 hours / 27-month biennium 20
Texas 40 hours / 2 years 20
Virginia 20 hours / year 20
Michigan 36 hours / 2 years 18
Washington 36 hours / 2 years 18
Tennessee 18 hours / calendar year 18

Not every state requirement listed above. State requirements can change without notice to NAB or NIC Academy. Candidates should contact their licensing jurisdiction for final confirmation of requirements. These examples should not be read as applying to every license type in the state. Assisted living and other administrator credentials may follow different rules.

Distance-Learning Considerations

Virginia: 20 hours/year; maximum 10 online. One 8-hour CSHIP course uses most of the annual online allowance.

Mississippi: Maximum 20 self-study hours per 2-year period, and max 20 hours from any single NCERS program.

Georgia: Maximum 32 of 40 renewal hours online.

Pennsylvania / Ohio / Texas: No distance-learning cap was identified for these examples, but licensees should still confirm current board rules.

Assisted Living: NAB acceptance varies by state and credential. For example, California RCFE administrators recertify through CDSS, which does not accept NAB credit.

Frequently Asked Questions

The National Association of Long Term Care Administrator Boards (NAB) is the national membership association of the state boards that license long-term care administrators, with member boards in all 50 states and D.C.

It develops four national examinations — CORE, NHA, RCAL, and HCBS — and operates the National Continuing Education Review Service (NCERS), which reviews and approves CE programs. NIC is an NCERS-approved CE provider.

NAB-approved CE is primarily relevant to professionals who maintain eligible long-term care administrator licenses or credentials. Coverage is most reliable in skilled nursing, where every facility has a licensed administrator of record, and applies in many – but not all – states for assisted living. Other credential holders may also be eligible depending on state rules. Independent living by itself is outside this administrator-licensure CE system.

NIC currently offers up to 88 NAB-approved participant hours across the approved CSHIP programs shown on this page: 40 through CSHIP Level I and 48 through CSHIP Level II. The number that may count toward your renewal depends on your state, credential, program dates, and applicable daily or distance-learning limits.

No. NAB approval confirms that a course qualifies as continuing education content. Whether – and how much – it counts toward your specific renewal is always determined by your state board, not by NIC Academy or NAB.

NIC Academy is responsible for verifying eligible completion or attendance and reporting credits to NAB’s CE Registry. NAB requires providers to report credits within 30 days of completion.

No. NAB caps any single program at 8 CE hours per 24-hour period, and any individual learner at 12 CE hours per 24-hour period. Each CSHIP course is 8 hours, so only one CSHIP course can be credited per day.

Not at this time.

Requirements are set by your state licensing board, not by NAB, and vary widely. Check the state CE credit chart above and confirm your current requirement directly through NAB’s state licensure directory and your state board.

All six CSHIP Level II courses are approved. Five of six CSHIP Level I courses are approved. The Capstone Experience is a cumulative review/assessment and is excluded from credit offerings.

CSHIP Level I is approved through August 27, 2027, and CSHIP Level II through September 24, 2027. NAB approvals must be renewed.

DL means Distance Learning. NAB approval codes also include the approval expiration date, approved program hours, and program identifier.

Your state licensing board does. NAB/NCERS determines whether a program qualifies as approved continuing education, but your state determines how many hours you need, how much distance learning it accepts, and whether specific subject areas are required.

NAB-approved CE is most consistently applicable to professionals who maintain long-term care administrator licenses or credentials. The Nursing Home Administrator (NHA) credential is used nationwide. NAB also supports credential lines for Residential Care/Assisted Living Administrators (RCAL), Home and Community-Based Services Executives (HCBS), and the Health Services Executive (HSE) qualification, but state adoption varies. Check your state board to confirm whether NAB-approved CE applies to your credential.

It may. Assisted living and memory care administrator requirements are set by each state, and not every state uses NAB as its pathway. Memory care generally follows the assisted living framework, although some states license it separately. Check your state licensing board to confirm whether NAB-approved CE applies to your credential.

It depends on the component of the campus and the credential you maintain. The skilled nursing component generally follows nursing home administrator requirements, while assisted living follows that state’s assisted living rules. Independent living does not create an administrator CE requirement on its own.
