Understanding Seniors Housing Demand, Choices, and Behavior: Insights From the AHEAD

and HRS Studies
This report analyzes data from two major studies, the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) and Asset and Health Dynamics Among the Oldest Old (AHEAD), which have been conducted every two years since 1993 by the University of Michigan. The resultant longitudinal study is a nationally representative sample of more than 13,000 households with over 22,000 occupants, at least one of whom is 50 years of age or older.Understanding Seniors Housing details information about households living in six types of age-qualified housing and compares them to those not living in seniors housing. It covers demographic characteristics and family structure, health and functional abilities, living environment, income and assets, and health insurance. This report also estimates the proportions of seniors households who live in each type of housing, and discusses the growth of households in age-qualified housing in the past decade. Prepared by the ProMatura Group, LLC, for NIC; 2003; 44 pages.
