NIC Announces Speakers for Second Annual ‘National Skilled Nursing Investment Forum’

Annapolis, Md. – The National Investment Center for the Seniors Housing & Care Industry today announced its keynote and general session speakers for the 2011 NIC Regional Symposium taking place March 7-8 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles. The symposium – “New Opportunities, New Realities: What’s in Your Playbook?” – hosted by NIC will feature nine breakout sessions, three general sessions and a special pre-event session:
- Kicking off with a high-level overview of today’s fast-changing playing field, the opening general session on Tuesday, March 8 will bring insights from panelists Paul W. Dendy, president, Milestone Retirement Communities, LLC; Aaron Koelsch, CEO and president, Koelsch Senior Communities; and F. Fee Stubblefield, Jr., president, The Springs Living, LLC. Led by moderator Marc Thompson, senior vice president, Bank of the West, this executive-level panel of independent, assisted and memory care community CEOs will offer thoughts on operational, financial and other challenges owner/operators are facing today in, “What’s in Your Playbook?”
- Author and documentary filmmaker Ken Dychtwald, Ph.D., president and CEO of Age Wave, will deliver Tuesday’s luncheon and keynote address, “Today’s Consumer, Tomorrow’s Consumer.” A leading visionary and original thinker on the lifestyle, marketing, healthcare, and workforce implications of the “age wave,” Dr. Dychtwald will discuss the mysteries of the senior consumer psyche – how it has changed, and what it means for seniors housing and care, allowing attendees to take a deeper look at the attitudes and behavior that shape purchase and lifestyle decisions by today’s and tomorrow’s seniors.
- In “Economic Update: Color Commentary and Analysis for Your Game Strategy,” economics expert John Mitchell, principal of M&H Economic Consultants and former chief economist, U.S. Bancorp, will share his view on the current business climate and what’s next for the recovery of the U.S. economy during Tuesday’s closing general session and keynote address. Dr. Mitchell will cover a range of topics-housing and credit markets, prospects for job growth, the impact of financial reform and regulation, interest rates, and employment – all from today’s headlines. When might we see meaningful recovery in the housing and job markets? What shape will it take? and, How might it affect seniors housing and care? are among the contemporary and relevant issues he will address.
- An optional pre-event session this year, a “NIC MAP Market Briefing,” takes place on Monday, March 7 from 4 to 6 p.m. Michael Hargrave, vice president, NIC MAP, and Chuck Harry, NIC research director, will provide a seniors housing market update and comprehensive review of the key trends and insights from the latest NIC MAP data. They will lead a discussion analyzing occupancy, rent growth and supply and demand trends seen industry wide and market-by-market with special emphasis on the markets in the western half of the U.S.
Additional topics covered during breakout sessions include strategies for recycling or repositioning older buildings, information metrics, the latest in sales and marketing techniques, lenders and their terms, loan package requirements, competing for capital, sourcing growth capital, how some companies faced maturities in their capital structure and new strategies to drive NOI.
Attendees will have multiple networking opportunities as well, including an opening reception, coffee/networking breaks and a dedicated networking lounge. The evening of March 8 features a joint networking reception with attendees of the co-located National Skilled Nursing Investment Forum taking place immediately after the Symposium, allowing attendees to interact with skilled nursing operators and capital providers to the sector.
The early bird registration rate for The 2011 NIC Regional Symposium is $750 for general (non-operator) attendees; $950 after Jan. 19. The operator rates are $650 (early bird) and $850 after Jan. 19. To attend both NIC events, the discounted rates are $1,050/$1,450 for operators; $1,250/$1,650 for general attendees.
